We have been inactive from tumblr because it was taking a toll on our mental health; we have been considering starting fresh and making a new account so we can properly curate our experience rather than following whomever would let us follow, or try to fit ourselves into a mold so they would like us, or whatnot, but, I still am not sure. If you would like our discord, you are very very welcome to DM us and ask, I am just uncomfortable with putting it out here on account of... Well, the other reason we left, which is paranoia.

not expecting you to have an answer and i'm not sure how to phrase this, but i've always wondered why god would "allow" for people to be born really sick or with difficult disabilities. it just feels so unfair to me that people are born with let's say down syndrome and they don't have the same chances as i do and i so deeply wish they did. it makes me so sad that they can't get a driver's license even if they really wanted to and tried their hardest, there's just no way.

i've always imagined a god that's also disabled, because then the "we're made in god's image" makes the most sense to me. but that is all i have.

opening this by saying that while i have read a lot of crip theology, and i have a congenital disability, i do not consider myself hugely impeded from functioning by my disability and my take on this should not be taken is definitive. i am not a crip theologian and deal strictly with problems of domination and subjugation within systems, rather than ontology. i would recommend john swinton, nancy eiseland, and in particular my body is not a prayer request: disability justice in the church by amy kenny, which i read and loved.

assuming that a disability is a tragedy is in itself a problematic stance: so is the idea of pitying disability by the assumption that they cannot have fulfilling lives if they are unable to partake in the created rituals and behaviours of societies are inherently ableist and exclusionary. the problem with disability is not the disability itself: the problem is the suffering that results from that disability, whether that suffering is innate (pain from the disability) or systemic (ableism, lack of treatment, lack of compassion).

equally problematic is the idea that god creates disabled people to be examples of something in themselves. i think your feeling that god is also disabled is the right one. when christ is crucified and resurrected, his resurrected body retains the wounds of his crucifixion: holes in the hands and feet, a wound in the side. did it hurt him? did he struggle to walk? did he experience chronic pain? did he have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder? i think he did, because not only is god disabled, but the god of the resurrection, the god who conquers death, is also disabled, because disability is not an impediment to the resurrection or to grace.

i also sense a feeling of "how can god allow suffering?" in your question. this question was the main impetus behind my break from faith as a teenager that led to identifying as an atheist. on a very theological basis, the way i understand this question is that the first gift god gives humanity is the gift of free will. to interfere in human history would be to deny humanity that gift, to roll back on his initial promise to give us freedom of choice. what occurs within human history is neither a sign of an uncaring god nor evidence to a lack of one. it just is: a neutral thing. how people respond to those occurrences that makes them good or bad. god does not single-handedly cause war or disability, but the ability to alleviate human suffering with the lifetimes of those who suffer is within the grasp of humanity. it is our responsibility to alleviate that suffering, not god's. this is the crux of being alive whether god exists or not.

edit: also not saying the disability is a result of "free choice"! nor that i believe that it's the result of the world being "fallen," which is something often alluded to in christian spaces and which is deeply ableist in itself.

One thing that has always bothered me about the magical system in HP is how much it... doesn’t exist? No one questions anything, there’s almost no theoretical exploration, and Hermione Granger (someone I’ve always found to be of average intelligence at best) is the brightest witch of her age.

Some characters seem to be inexplicably more powerful, but I wonder if it isn’t simply a matter of discipline and will-power.

What are your thoughts on magic? We never really see what light vs. dark entails, so fanfic authors tend to make it up as they go along, but do you have any head-canons about how magic works in HP?

I mean, to be fair, it wasn’t really the point of JKR’s series. She just wanted to write about a kid going to a magic boarding school in Scotland with this quirky witch aesthetic. 

No need for her to placate us uber nerds who demand a sensible explanation to the minutia of her magical system. 

Right, but yes, it clearly bothers me too. No one questions anything, there’s no understanding of why wands and spells even work, or why it has to be in this weird pseudo-Latin. No one even bothers to learn Latin, for that matter, and you think they would given the damn spells. 

Hermione Granger is the brightest witch of her age given that “her age” is either around 30 people (the amount of people in her year) or else around 300 (the population of Hogwarts at a given time) which is a pitiful amount. She also is an extremely hard worker and actually reads her textbooks, sadly I think this gets you ahead of 95% of the population.

Part of the reason I think the Wizarding World thinks like this is that they’re this incredibly tiny, cut off, insular society. Generally, when you have a small society cut off like that you tend to lose innovation or even understanding of technology you have.

But that’s not what you asked. Right.

Personally, I think there is no light and dark magic. Magic is just this part of the natural universe that muggles, for whatever reason, are not able to directly access. It’s neither good nor bad, it just is. For that matter, I don’t think spells themselves really exist, or rather, they’re not what magic really is in its purest form but instead a way that humans can easily access and control magic to perform a certain task. Kind of a glorified API if you will. 

So, dark magic and light magic are instead arbitrary labels that wizards apply to their own tool box based on the functions of that tool. If you have a tool that is only designed for/can be used for the murder and torture of sentient beings: well, that’s bad, we’ll call that dark. That said, do I think the spells themselves are inherently evil? No. It’s like if you open up your tool box, pick out a sledgehammer, and go, “This, my child, is an instrument of pure evil and you must never touch it.” Well, that’s a bad comparison, it’d be like taking a handgun out of your tool box and saying “this is a dark weapon”. Now, this gets into a debate I don’t want to get into, but to me dark spells are a lot like handguns (they’re designed for only one purpose and there’s no squirming your way out of what that purpose is).

Now, I think wizards have forgotten this (mostly because they don’t understand what spells or magic is), and so they get very hung up on the labels of spells or even just your odd genetic trait (i.e. parseltongue). So, we have these weird moments where someone uses, say, the severing charm to cut somebody open in the middle of the street. And it’s less bad than if they had used the killing curse to kill them painlessly and easily, because the severing charm’s not dark magic. 

It’s like... If someone were to walk out and bash someone over the head with a sledgehammer until it kills them it’s less evil than if they shot them in the head with a handgun.

Wizards seem to miss the point of this. 

As for what magic is, I believe it’s... direct energy that wizards are able to access in a way that muggles (thus far) cannot. What do I mean by thus far? Well, look at electricity. In ye olden days, I’m sure that if you asked a wizard they would say that making artificial light without flame is a property solely done by magic and muggles are not capable of it. Well, muggles then did it, and suddenly the definition and parameters of magic change. Wizards are kind of like chess grand masters who suddenly lose to your AI du jour, who say that it doesn’t count because the AI didn’t really do it like a human would. It’s not real intelligence.

I don’t believe people have magic in and of themselves, any more than anyone else does at any rate, because we see too little differences between powerful and mediocre wizards. You’re either a squib or you’re not, there doesn’t really seem to be a spectrum, and those who struggle with spells appear to do so for other reasons (Neville has severe confidence issues and is traumatized, Harry’s an idiot, etc.) 

I think what separates the great wizards from the rest is hard work, the ability to read books and learn from them, even an inkling of understanding of how spells really work and how to create them (and this makes you Voldemort level right here), and a good ear to be able to pronounce your ridiculous pseudo Latin.

The wand is a tool specifically designed so that, with repeatable easy to understand steps, you can perform a whole array of tasks and even use them as building blocks to develop a new spell (combine swishes, flicks, and various garbled sentences together in such a way and BAM new spell).

Your wand, in other words, is your API to direct and access untold amounts of energy from the universe.

But people have forgotten that so instead what you memorize are very specific function calls that will prove useful in your daily life.

As for the wand and spells themselves, well, here’s my hokey ridiculous theory on how that came about. A long time ago, a brilliant foreigner enters the Roman Empire with a revolutionary idea that puts him on the level of Einstein/Newton/Feynman Name Your Stupidly Brilliant Physicist. He says, hey, how about instead of doing these time consuming magical rituals we develop a tool that, in a matter of seconds, allows us to perform truly complicated and powerful magic any time we want. No more relying on having the right ingredients about, virgin sacrifices, the full moon, etc.

Everyone probably laughs at him, but then he goes off and designs a rudimentary wand, and through probably some uber ritual that was dangerous as hell implements this system by which by flicking your wand a certain way and saying basic commands like “levitate”, “repair”, etc. you can perform these tasks.

Only, the guy’s foreign and Good Will Hunting (no formal education in the empire), so he doesn’t actually speak Latin. So what you have instead is this weird half-Latin like, “Leviupwards Fly”, “Repair-o”, etc. 

It sounds dumb as hell, but goddammit it works, and more it gives Roman wizards an unheard of advantage against their enemy wizards who are all stuck doing these stupid rituals. They suddenly have a vast military might, so long as they use these wands and spells this guy came up with.

Everybody who’s anybody, who wants to win a fight, is now using wands. Wandcraft becomes a huge deal and people specialize in fine tuning these things exactly so as to get the maximum efficiency for a particular user.

And they probably go up to our guy and say, “Hey, buddy, can you make this in actual Latin? I can barely remember what it is I’m supposed to say to get this to work” and after the hours, and hours, and hours he spent making this thing that nobody helped him with he goes, “DO IT YOURSELF, BITCH”. And they never do because they’re too damn lazy/have no idea how he actually did it and any attempt to recreate it ends up with something that’s pitiful and doesn’t work. 

So, they’re all stuck with it, and thousands of years later they forget this guy even existed and while there’s a recognition that not all magic has to be performed by wands there’s just this feeling that the wand is the magic. And so no one will ever come up with an English/French/Whatever version where when you say “Up” the thing goes up.

I recently saw a post about how it is amazing that a man like Din, who captures and/or kills (or at least freezes) people for a living, can still be soft. And how someone raised by the Watch can know so many things. But I don’t know if it is all really that surprising, tbh. Sure, it makes him a special kind of person. Not going to deny this. But I think the show gives us a really good explanation for what he knows (and what he doesn’t know --- “Are you a Jedi?!”) and how he retains his respect for other people.

For one, I think that the Watch does indeed teach their foundlings a lot. It seems like Din’s coven has many rules in place, a lot of moral codes, too, exemplified in the show by THE rule - don’t take your helmet off. Even if these morals differ highly from our own moral codes in our society as viewers, they are nevertheless there. You use Beskar to make your armor. You donate the rest so the foundlings can be raised properly. You live in the shadows. You respect your Armorer. You help each other. And so forth.

What they apparently didn’t teach him is anything to do with Jedi. Nor did they tell the truth about Mandalore, apparently. That doesn’t mean Din is stupid, though. It just exemplifies how he was deliberately left with blind spots.

Apart from being a Mandalorian by creed, Din is also a member the Guild. He’s not a rogue. There is another overall element of “lawful” to that in itself, even if some of it might be lawful evil, - until he rescues Grogu.

What about the job as bounty hunter and its requirements for success? If you want to find anyone in this galaxy, you HAVE to be able to communicate. You have to be able to instill fear but also respect, and to show cunning. A Mandalorian is hunter and hunted, is what the Armorer said. Din has to be able to hide if need be but much more importantly, he has to be able to negotiate all sorts of deals to do his job properly and meanwhile stay alive. The lone wolf pose is a good way to get respect and seem dangerous but without the knowledge of how communication systems work, how societies function, it’s a dead end. This also made me think about Din’s time on Tattooine. Didn’t he say something like that he lived there for some years? Din doesn’t just speak Tusken like someone who learnt a language at school. He knows their culture. He respects their culture and the way he is fluent in their language is just one very obvious expression of that. Knowledge of their customs, the way he so animatedly communicates with them and seamlessly fits into their environment gives us a good hint of his capabilities and character. It’s the “good” example so to speak. Meanwhile, his experience with the Jawas in season one pretty much functions as a “bad” example. It shows what happens if you not so much fail to but even refuse to respect a people’s way of living. Din’s anger is more than understandable. But it also doesn’t lead anywhere good or helpful. He gets fried by the Jawas. They still have half his ship in their Sandcrawler. Only negotiating (a silly and dangerous - yes) deal leads to success. Coming back to the Sandpeople, I noticed one thing. Din is very much seen in a similar way by outsiders as they are. Dangerous. Deadly. Someone you cannot talk or reason with. But that’s a facade. That’s a prejudice. Not the truth. It doesn’t strike me as surprising that Din connects to a people who basically have their home planet taken away from them by outsiders, are feared, demonized and marginalized.Yet, they survived, too. They’re still there.

What does a bar smell like? Are babies heavy? Does my dentist have a mustache? On what street was the good sandwich place near work, the one that toasted its bread? How much does a movie popcorn cost? What do people talk about when they don’t have a global disaster to talk about all the time? You have to wear high heels the whole night? It’s more baffling than distressing, most of the time.

I first became aware that I was losing my mind in late December. It was a Friday night, the start of my 40-somethingth pandemic weekend: Hours and hours with no work to distract me, and outside temperatures prohibitive of anything other than staying in. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to fill the time. “What did I used to … do on weekends?” I asked my boyfriend, like a soap-opera amnesiac. He couldn’t really remember either.

Since then, I can’t stop noticing all the things I’m forgetting. Sometimes I grasp at a word or a name. Sometimes I walk into the kitchen and find myself bewildered as to why I am there. (At one point during the writing of this article, I absentmindedly cleaned my glasses with nail-polish remover.) Other times, the forgetting feels like someone is taking a chisel to the bedrock of my brain, prying everything loose. Everywhere I turn, the fog of forgetting has crept in. A friend of mine recently confessed that the morning routine he’d comfortably maintained for a decade—wake up before 7, shower, dress, get on the subway—now feels unimaginable on a literal level: He cannot put himself back there. Another has forgotten how to tie a tie. A co-worker isn’t sure her toddler remembers what it’s like to go shopping in a store. The comedian Kylie Brakeman made a joke video of herself attempting to recall pre-pandemic life, the mania flashing across her face: “You know what I miss, is, like, those night restaurants that served alcohol. What were those called?” she asks. “And there were those, like, big men outside who would check your credit card to make sure you were 41?”

Jen George, a community-college teacher from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, told me she is losing her train of thought in the middle of a sentence more and more often. Meanwhile, her third grader, who is attending in-person school, keeps leaving his books, papers, and lunch at home. Inny Ekeolu, a 19-year-old student from Ireland, says she has found herself forgetting how to do things she used to do on a regular basis: swiping her bus pass, paying for groceries. Recently she came across a photo of a close friend she hadn’t seen since lockdown and found that she couldn’t recognize her. “It wasn’t like I had forgotten her existence,” she told me. “But if I had bypassed her on the street, I wouldn’t have said hi.” Rachel Kowert, a research psychologist in Ottawa, used to have a standing Friday-night dinner with her neighbors—and went completely blank when one of them recently mentioned it. “It was really shocking,” Kowert told me. “This was something I really loved, and had done for a long time, and I had totally forgotten.”

This is the fog of late pandemic, and it is brutal. In the spring, we joked about the Before Times, but they were still within reach, easily accessible in our shorter-term memories. In the summer and fall, with restrictions loosening and temperatures rising, we were able to replicate some of what life used to be like, at least in an adulterated form: outdoor drinks, a day at the beach. But now, in the cold, dark, featureless middle of our pandemic winter, we can neither remember what life was like before nor imagine what it’ll be like after.

To some degree, this is a natural adaptation. The sunniest optimist would point out that all this forgetting is evidence of the resilience of our species. Humans forget a great deal of what happens to us, and we tend to do it pretty quickly—after the first 24 hours or so. “Our brains are very good at learning different things and forgetting the things that are not a priority,” Tina Franklin, a neuroscientist at Georgia Tech, told me. As the pandemic has taught us new habits and made old ones obsolete, our brains have essentially put actions like taking the bus and going to restaurants in deep storage, and placed social distancing and coughing into our elbows near the front of the closet. When our habits change back, presumably so will our recall.

That’s the good news. The pandemic is still too young to have yielded rigorous, peer-reviewed studies about its effects on cognitive function. But the brain scientists I spoke with told me they can extrapolate based on earlier work about trauma, boredom, stress, and inactivity, all of which do a host of very bad things to a mammal’s brain.

“We’re all walking around with some mild cognitive impairment,” said Mike Yassa, a neuroscientist at UC Irvine. “Based on everything we know about the brain, two of the things that are really good for it are physical activity and novelty. A thing that’s very bad for it is chronic and perpetual stress.” Living through a pandemic—even for those who are doing so in relative comfort—“is exposing people to microdoses of unpredictable stress all the time,” said Franklin, whose research has shown that stress changes the brain regions that control executive function, learning, and memory.

That stress doesn’t necessarily feel like a panic attack or a bender or a sleepless night, though of course it can. Sometimes it feels like nothing at all. “It’s like a heaviness, like you’re waking up to more of the same, and it’s never going to change,” George told me, when I asked what her pandemic anxiety felt like. “Like wading through something thicker than water. Maybe a tar pit.” She misses the sound of voices.

Prolonged boredom is, somewhat paradoxically, hugely stressful, Franklin said. Our brains hate it. “What’s very clear in the literature is that environmental enrichment—being outside of your home, bumping into people, commuting, all of these changes that we are collectively being deprived of—is very associated with synaptic plasticity,” the brain’s inherent ability to generate new connections and learn new things, she said. In the 1960s, the neuroscientist Marian Diamond conducted a series of experiments on rats in an attempt to understand how environment affects cognitive function. Time after time, the rats raised in “enriched” cages—ones with toys and playmates—performed better at mazes.

Ultimately, said Natasha Rajah, a psychology professor at McGill University, in Montreal, our winter of forgetting may be attributable to any number of overlapping factors. “There’s just so much going on: It could be the stress, it could be the grief, it could be the boredom, it could be depression,” she said. “It sounds pretty grim, doesn’t it?”

The share of Americans reporting symptoms of anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, or both roughly quadrupled from June 2019 to December 2020, according to a Census Bureau study released late last year. What’s more, we simply don’t know the long-term effects of collective, sustained grief. Longitudinal studies of survivors of Chernobyl, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina show elevated rates of mental-health problems, in some cases lasting for more than a decade.

I have a job that allows me to work from home, an immune system and a set of neurotransmitters that tend to function pretty well, a support network, a savings account, decent Wi-Fi, plenty of hand sanitizer. I have experienced the pandemic from a position of obscene privilege, and on any given day I’d rank my mental health somewhere north of “fine.” And yet I feel like I have spent the past year being pushed through a pasta extruder. I wake up groggy and spend every day moving from the couch to the dining-room table to the bed and back. At some point night falls, and at some point after that I close work-related browser windows and open leisure-related ones. I miss my little rat friends, but I am usually too tired to call them.

Sometimes I imagine myself as a Sim, a diamond-shaped cursor hovering above my head as I go about my day. Tasks appear, and I do them. Mealtimes come, and I eat. Needs arise, and I meet them. I have a finite suite of moods, a limited number of possible activities, a set of strings being pulled from far offscreen. Everything is two-dimensional, fake, uncanny. My world is as big as my apartment, which is not very big at all.

“We’re trapped in our dollhouses,” said Kowert, the psychologist from Ottawa, who studies video games. “It’s just about surviving, not thriving. No one is working at their highest capacity.” She has played The Sims on and off for years, but she always gives up after a while—it’s too repetitive.

Earlier versions of The Sims had an autonomous memory function, according to Marina DelGreco, a staff writer for Game Rant. But in The Sims 3, the system was buggy; it bloated file sizes and caused players’ saved progress to delete. So The Sims 4, released in 2014, does not automatically create memories. PC users can manually enter them, and Sims can temporarily feel feelings: happy, tense, flirty. But for the most part, a Sim is a hollow vessel, more like a machine than a living thing.

The game itself doesn’t have a term for this, but the internet does: “smooth brain,” or sometimes “head empty,” which I first started noticing sometime last summer. Today, the TikTok user @smoothbrainb1tch has nearly 100,000 followers, and stoners on Twitter are marveling at the fact that their “silky smooth brain” was once capable of calculus.

This is, to be clear, meant to be an aspirational state. It’s the step after galaxy brain, because the only thing better than being a genius in a pandemic is being intellectually unencumbered by mass grief. People are celebrating “smooth brain Saturday” and chasing the ideal summer vibe: “smooth skin, smooth brain.” One frequently reposted meme shows a photograph of a glossy, raw chicken breast, with the caption “Cant think=no sad .” This is juxtaposed against a biology-textbook picture of a healthy brain, which is wrinkled, oddly translucent, and the color of canned tuna. The choice seems obvious.

Some Saturday not too long from now, I will go to a party or a bar or even a wedding. Maybe I’ll hold a baby, and maybe it will be heavy. Inevitably, I will kick my shoes off at some point. I won’t have to wonder about what I do on weekends, because I’ll be doing it. I’ll kiss my friends and try their drinks and marvel at how everyone is still the same, but a little different, after the year we all had. My brain won’t be smooth anymore, but being wrinkly won’t feel so bad. My synapses will be made plastic by the complicated, strange, utterly novel experience of being alive again, human again. I can’t wait.

Good Morning everyone! I'm back!

 I am happy to say that it is over, any reported harassment's against me were investigated; I had to send so much crap in and was told to wait; I was not guaranteed anything but it is luckily over and I can move past that and enjoy my followers and dear Tumblr family once again

Thank you for the few who gave me the support; I did get the messages whoever you are, I really would like to put a face to them but will not post them publicly to keep everyone safe. 

Now I want to take this time to apologize to everyone for whatever I did because for the two people I had contact with talked me out of a very permanent plan to officially leave here if I lost my page after many years of being able to confide in people who cared and built me up because this is my safe zone; my safe haven away from my reality which I do need my escape to forget for just a second. 

Returning to Tumblr after a forced hiatus, I was just happy to be back and check on my loved ones; getting my new phone in and finally having access to the internet again had me so happy until I got a message I did not fully understand

Now I had just returned; I had no clue what was going on when this happened and, yes, it upset me deeply to be delighted to talk to somebody I considered a friend and instead while replying to ask how they were doing wanting to be sure they were okay ((Understanding the person had been having troubles before I vanished I was looking in on a friend)) before the chat showed they had blocked me right after

Like everyone on here except one person; there is no way to contact me if I go missing. If I am not here due to I either: 1.) not having internet thanks to the person in control of it or 2.) functioning with a broken phone meaning - I did not get updates unless it was somebody who knew who to contact

I had no other way of reaching out since the friend is no longer active here after leaving months ago.

I had no clue what was transpiring and, Lexi, who anyone who has followed me since the beginning, is my lovely Anonymous penpal who sends me writing ideas for stories and the only real reason I left anonymous asks active because she, like me, suffers from extreme anxiety was trying to boost positivity for me because she understood my situation and the place I am in

I understand now she contacted a lot of people looking for me because; my anon messaging was finally turned off weeks before I left right after I stood up to my bully – I am sorry for that I did not get to say goodbye to anyone because it happened without warning and to those who knew what was going on I knew you would understand, and I know I worried a few people, it was never my plan to be such an inconvenience 

Now at some point in the last few days, I had a dear friend send me some things in a submission that I never saw and wish I never had, thankfully; I know now, and for the sake of their sanity and to keep from adding any more drama or toxic actions to our wonderful fandom, they will remain unnamed because I do not want them catching any hate

Nobody here deserves hate.

Garrus:  Nobody would give me a mirror. How bad is it?

Shepard: Hell, Garrus, you were always ugly. Slap some face-paint on there, and no one will even notice.

Garrus: Ha--ah! Don’t make me laugh, damn it. My face is barely holding together as it is.

Garrus: Well, some women find facial scars attractive. Mind you, most of those women are krogan...

jacob salutes and leaves you guys to catch up, and the moment the doors close behind him, garrus starts voicing his concerns.

Garrus: Frankly, I’m more worried about you. Cerberus, Shepard? You remember those sick experiements they were doing?

Shepard: Right now, they’re a necessary evil. I need their resources to get this done.

also, you know, they built us back from nothing and are holding that above our heads, not to mention provided us with a ship and a crew and an AI that would all tattle.

garrus tells us that whatever he’s needed for, he’s fit to do, and he’ll go settle in at the forward batteries of the ship, which will be his main hangout spot during me2, and you can be sure i’m running right after him to have our 2-year catchup session.

i guess considering what happened to the last normandy... yeah, you really can’t.

Garrus: I thought I’d seen every weapon in the galaxy in our fight against Saren. Mercenary work showed me otherwise. And now Cerberus rebuilds the Normandy with a few upgrades to boot. I wish we’d joined up with them sooner.

Shepard: We haven’t joined Cerberus. They’re funding our mission. That’s all.

Garrus: Relax, Shepard. Just a figure of speech.

the translator in the omni-tool doesn’t always work for idioms and the like, leaving turians and humans particularly at a disadvantage with one another considering their cultural differences. it’s pretty cute that garrus has gotten this one right and that shep’s the one misunderstanding.

Garrus: I can’t exactly doubt your judgment. Not after I got my own squad killed.

Shepard: What did your merc squad do? It didn’t sound like you were available for hire.

Garrus: You saw OMega -- it was full of thugs kicking the helpless. I formed my team to kick back. We weren’t mercenaries. At least, nobody was paying us. We made money by taking down slavers, pirates, or gangs that went too far.

Shepard: Doesn’t sound like you made any friends with the gangs.

Garrus: I got three separate merc bands to work together to take me down. My manager at C-Sec would be impressed. It was simple. We’d hit their shipments, disrupt activities. Get under their skin. Make them angry. They’d come charging right into our well-prepared killzone. Crossfire and snipers, clean and surgical. They never stood a chance.

Shepard: Sounds like you were just another gang.

Garrus: Then I’m saying it wrong. We didn’t shake anyone down. No civilian casualties. That was our rule. Every member of my team had lost someone to Omega’s gangs. We weren’t out to get rich. We were out to make thos bastards think twice before murdering someone in the street.

garrus was going cowboy cop toward the end of me1, where we tracked down someone that wasn’t arrested and dealt with in a manner of his liking... but he seems to have taken a step back once the grudge was dealt with and figured out a way to carry on dispensing justice in a manner that wasn’t just going out for revenge. kinda. sure, his team all had grudges against the gangs of omega, but... they probably weren’t the only ones. not that violence for violence’s sake is acceptable, but i can see his reasoning well enough. make the gangs unable to function, pick off the main players, and there’s less problems to deal with on omega.

... he is forgetting that at the top of the chain is aria, though, and in a power vacuum in gang-controlled space it’s likely that someone else would have stepped in without too much fuss and carried on what the main three gangs were doing in the first place, though.

Shepard: Tell me about your squad.

Garrus: There were 12 of us, including me. Former military operatives, C-Sec agents, the usual. Had a salarian explosives expert. Pretty sure he’d spent time in the STG. My tech expert was a batarian, believe it or not. Not the friendliest guy, but he could hack any system ever built.

Shepard: How’d you end up fighting mercenaries on Omega in the first place?

Garrus: I trained to become a Spectre after the Normandy was destroyed, but it didn’t work out. Too much politicking at the Citadel. Nobody was willing to take risks. Omega was filled with criminals nobody else could touch, and there was no red tape to slow me down. It was a perfect fit. People here needed someone to believe in. Someone to stand up to the local thugs.

Shepard: That explains how you started. How’d you end up with a squad?

Garrus: Not too different from how you formed your squad to fight Saren, actually. You prove that you get things done, and people join up. Mercs who wanted to aton. Security consultants tired of playing by the rules. I gave them hope.

Garrus: And now they’re dead. Shows what I know.

Shepard: I’m not sure I understand. What happened?

Garrus: Sidonis asked for my help on a job. When I got to the meeting point, nobody was there. By the time I got back to our hideout, the mercs had killed all but two of my squad. And they didn’t last long.

Shepard: Are you sure it was a betrayal? Maybe they took Sidonis out first.

Garrus: No. I’ve put out feelers with some old contacts. He booked transport off Omega just before the attack. He also cleared out his private accounts before he left. He sold me out and ran.

Shepard: Know where he is now?

Garrus: No, his trail vanished after he leaves Omega. But I’ll keep hunting.

garrus’ evolution from wanting to find and kill dr saleon to wanting to find and kill sidonis is... really not that far of a stretch, actually. he’s a very emotional character, despite what we’re told about turians - that they’re militaristic and follow rules rigidly. his desire to do what’s right drives him as a turian, sure, but under it all there’s a sense of morals that’s completely unwavering. saleon was a bad person not just because of his illegal operations, but because what he was doing ran so counterpoint to what garrus considers moral and correct that the only way to deal with him, in his eyes, was to find him and put him down to keep him from doing it more (since the authorities were clearly no help). and it’s the same here - whatever sidonis’ reasons for his actions, garrus only sees one path before him.

it’s realistic, and it’s dangerous. who watches the watchmen, indeed - at what point does garrus realise that this is how he deals with what he deems immoral? when does death for death cross the line?

naturally, garrus’ loyalty mission is all about sidonis and the typing up of loose ends, so we’ll be coming back to this later on.

Okay, I'm gonna do a separate post since I don't want to hijack @dad-plo-koon‘s post.

Here's my theory about why Mandalore is the way it is in TCW. Even better, the canon isn't saying I'm wrong. 

Cut for length:

HOkay. SO.

719 years before the rise of the Empire: The Mandalorian Excision. 

Mandalore is doing well -- great, actually, they've never been more productive and they've just opened a few new beskar mines. The settlements on the moon -- Concordia -- and on Concord Dawn (not to be confused with Concordia) have proven to be self-sufficient. Things are looking up!

Except not quite. Mandalore's nearest neighbor is Kalevala. They're absolutely terrified of Mandalore going on the warpath again; Kalevala's likely sent spies to investigate Mandalore's status. What they find is deeply concerning.

Kalevala goes to the Republic -- specifically the Jedi -- for assistance. If Mandalore starts conquering again, Kalevala thinks it'll be the first target on the list. They’re probably not wrong, either. The Jedi and the Mando'ade do not have a fantastic history between them; the Jedi's response is to nip Mandalorian growth in the bud.

The Republic invades Mandalorian space. Technically illegally, but history is written by the victors.

Parts of Concord Dawn and other Mandalorian-held worlds suffer catastrophic bombardment during the fighting, but Mandalore is hit the hardest: half the planet is literally glassed before the end. What's left when the surface cools is a scintillating crystal desert on the southern half of Mandalore, the sand utterly useless for industrial applications without extensive processing. Even the untouched northern half of the planet suffers ecologically as the seas boil off. The planet spends months wracked by deadly weather systems caused by the complete disruption of the existing balance.

The Republic then blockades the sector and occupies it, installing their own government to manage things. The Mando’ade are forced to conceal all outward connections to the Resol’nare: no armour, no weapons, no overt training.

Beskar being as resilient as it is, the southern mines have been sealed at ground level, but below the surface are relatively intact. The Mando’ade try to rebuild, but it's a tough process when you have no outside trade coming in and a hostile power literally controlling what you can and cannot do with your own planet. It’s also physically dangerous -- inhaling glass dust can lead to silicosis and other diseases, as well as any of the compounds in the dust which might be carcinogenic. A huge portion of the southern continent had been used for industry, after all. And with half the planet's lush farmland slagged, they can't locally support the work.

Maybe it started as altruism; maybe it was always the plan.

Kalevala offers assistance in rebuilding. The Republic lets them, because hey, Kalevala was the one that lit this off in the first place. Maybe they feel a little regret? The glass-dust sand is bad for everything -- machines, droids, and people alike -- so they start with force fields and then transparisteel domes that also regulate their internal climate. Kalevala starts by building on top of the southern beskar mine access points and drilling through the melted bedrock, so the material to rebuild can be collected without risking going out on the desert. They bring in extra help from Kalevala. It takes a couple decades to get the dome cities to the point where they can operate without direct assistance from offworld.

The Republic offers no direct assistance during the Reconstruction, but it’s pretty clear who they’re favoring. When they finally back out of Mandalorian space, it’s a Kalevalan regent they leave in charge.

By this point, the Kalevalans who arrived to assist in the reconstruction have settled. Families have been started. The domes are designed for comfort, and with the beskar mines now functioning as commercial sources, there's a financial boom that promises to have the population living well.

Somehow, those proceeds never make it to the northern half of Mandalore. Some of the survivors warned against cooperating with the Kalevalans, and others kept reminding the people set on restoring the south that the Mando'ade don't need a planet in order to have a home: they can have the Resol'nare again, for which these outsiders have no understanding nor respect.

The largest dome in the south, Sundari, schisms from Keldabe. The northerners have a Mand'alor -- or choose a new one, if the previous perished in the Excision (there’s no information either way) -- but they don't understand what it was like to suffer in the desert trying to rebuild -- maybe there was a disagreement during the process on how things should be done. Sundari picks its own Mand'alor -- one of the Kalevalans who had gained a good reputation during the Reconstruction, someone who at least appreciates the local culture.

They set up a local government that's similar to what they're accustomed to on Kalevala -- and why shouldn't they? Their advisors are Kalevalan, and it's not like the southern population is going to resist the policies of a Mand'alor they elected.

Diplomatic discussions open up with Kalevala. See, they didn't just provide assistance out of the goodness of their hearts: they expected repayment. Through a combination of politics and trade deals, Mandalore becomes subject to Kalevala; to take the sting off, it's declared an extension of Kalevalan territory -- rather than a colony, which would have much lower political standing -- and declared a duchy so the planet has self-determination. The southern Mand'alor gains the title of Duke/Duchess. They're still elected, but somehow the role never strays far from the hands of Kalevalan political elites.

Again: maybe this was the plan all along, or maybe it was a bunch of rich people being opportunistic. The end result is the same.

Here’s the thing about the Resol’nare: one of the tenets is answering to the Mand’alor. If you don’t follow the Mand’alor, you’re considered dar’manda -- no longer Mandalorian. If there’s more than one group with their own Mand’alor, things get... sticky.

Tensions are high between south and north -- the New Mandalorians and the True Mandalorians. It's not really surprising the True Mandalorians would be upset: who are these outsiders to come in here, claim our titles, and then sell our world? In an effort to boost the New Mandalorian population, Kalevala offers opportunities to its citizens to help their Mandalorian territories, and to show the Mando'ade that there's a better way to live than constant warfare.

If this looks like a classic example of colonization, that's because it is.

Attempts by the New Mandalorians to subtly colonize the north have only limited success -- they can't prove it was sabotage, but they suspect. The Mando'ade who do go south for whatever reason -- extending friendship, joining family, seeking work, accepting offers from the New Mandalorians, whatever -- find that their appearance sets them apart. The New Mandalorians are nice about it, but enough social pressure happens that those Mando’ade who can't afford to leave feel stifled. Dark hair is bleached to fit in, accents are adopted, Mando'a is only spoken at home and isn't taught in the schools. Mando’ade who aren’t human -- and there are many -- have a particularly difficult time among the New Mandalorians. The Resol'nare is still kept, but only in the privacy of the home.

AND THEN. 

A few hundred years down the line, Mand’alor Jaster Mereel of the True Mandalorians attempts to enact some (overdue and widely demanded) cultural reform. Resistant splinter groups form, most notably Death Watch under the command of Tor Viszla, sparking off the Mandalorian Civil War. Viszla kills Mereel during a battle on Korda Six, leaving Mereel’s adopted son, Jango Fett, to pick up the reins. Death Watch arranges for an ambush on Galidraan that pits True Mandalorians against a detachment of Jedi and ends with Fett being sold into slavery for several years. 

With the True Mandalorians scattered, Death Watch turns their attention on the New Mandalorians, who had remained neutral throughout the conflict.

The Duke is assassinated. His teenage daughter, barely old enough to accept the title the New Mandalorians offer her, goes into hiding from Death Watch’s assassins for a year with her Jedi protectors. Traumatized and blaming anything that could be considered a warlike nature, she completely abolishes part of the Resol'nare. No armour, no weapons, no training at all. Those who protest are offered a shuttle to Concordia or Concord Dawn -- not sending them back north to bolster the decimated ranks of the True Mandalorians. She would clear the True Mandalorians off the north entirely if she could, but achieving that would require the type of violence she abhors. 

Dipping into the meta for a moment: any visual designs are a deliberate choice by the creators. Even in other cultures in TCW where there’s a level of uniformity, there are defined genetic differences in hair colour (not going to get into how everyone’s clothes always use the same palette, because that’s done for a different reason). Satine’s blond hair is noticeably a more natural shade; the bright yellow or “brassy” colour seen on a lot of civilians is the result of a bleach job that hasn’t removed all the natural tint, either by choice or by accident. This is a deliberate artistic choice and the creators are trying to tell the audience something about the culture. There’s no reason for that to be the case unless there’s social pressure behind it to maintain a certain appearance. Particularly since -- one would assume -- Death Watch still maintains the acceptance of non-human species into their ranks, conformity of appearance both expresses the New Mandalorians’ passive resistance to their enemy and internal support for their culture. 

It’s worth noting that the Excision itself was a plot device introduced to the IP in 2010 specifically as backstory for the show.

Mandalore’s implied recent history is one of colonization and cultural genocide, and you can fight me over it.

VLD1x06 – “The Fall of the Castle of Lions”

1x06 – “The Fall of the Castle of Lions”

Party in the Castle of Lions for the Arusians. Allura proclaims that Arus is the first planet in the Voltron Alliance. I don’t know precisely what the Arusians are adding that’s useful to the Alliance, but since they’ve been the location of the Castle, and thus Allura and Coran, for 10,000 years they do deserve to be able to call upon the protection and help of the Alliance.

“Vol—tron?” I’m with Keith: I’m not much for cheering.

Shiro’s concern about people coming and going foreshadows that someone will indeed be infiltrating the Castle soon enough. Shiro’s concern here also makes me think of Keith’s concern in the previous episode when Allura first made direct contact with the Arusians. For me, there’s something reassuring about their respective modes of caution.

Sendak is plotting. Haxus moves to clone a signature code of Pidge’s Rover so that he can send another drone into the Castle to cause problems. I like that the episode takes its time to set up the explosion, the trick in the Arusian village, and the trouble that the characters will be dealing with. The pacing allows for tension to build, instead of just dumping trouble on us.

Allura’s conversation with the mice is a much-needed moment to show us that she’s not as confident as she usually seems. It helps counterbalance what we’ve seen of her to this point. She feels under great pressure due to the situation she’s in. The scene quickly moves to her discussing other things with the mice, but that little bit is enough to make her a much more complicated, and thus interesting, character. It shows some of her emotional vulnerability, and that’s the sort of thing that endears me to characters.

Lance being homesick here is something that I feel gets lost too easily in later seasons of the show. I’m a rather rooted, homebody myself, so I totally sympathize with Lance missing his family and home environment.

I’m not sure exactly how I feel about how Allura reacts to learning Pidge is a girl. It’s an aspect of Pidge that is significant enough that I feel like it’s invasive and rude for Allura to try to push Pidge to reveal it, but I also know what it’s like to have something like that about oneself that one is hiding and know how useful and needed it can be to have people try to let you know that they’re available for you to tell. I feel Allura is trying to let Pidge know that talking to her can be a safe space, but it still comes with some awkwardness on how Allura goes about trying to convey that in this scene. But then, that awkwardness could really just be an element that makes the conversation feel like such a realistic conversation two people in this situation would have.

Pidge announces that she’s leaving Voltron since she’s got some information about her brother and father. While I totally understand Pidge placing priority on her family, her leaving now does carry an aspect of betrayal with it. She was just going to steal a craft from the Castle and go off on her own. It’s also another demonstration that Pidge sometimes just does not think things through. What does she know about the galaxy? So far, she’s been to only two non-Earth planets, both of which are peaceful ones. What resources would she have to call upon going off on her own? These are major obstacles to her plan here. Her assumption that her working in isolation will yield results is so naïve. She doesn’t even try to ask the others for help, which suggests she doesn’t trust anyone. Pidge behaving in such short-sighted ways just makes me feel uncomfortable.

I like that we get a bit of a quiet scene between Lance and Coran, as Lance’s being homesick continues. When you have ensemble stories, pairing different characters together to play off of one another is a structural way to reveal some of their respective characterization. It’s still early in this show, this being only the sixth episode, and this pairing of Lance and Coran is one I would expect to come later, not now. Because of that, it feels fresh and interesting having it happen now.

“You ever notice how far the planets are from each other, Coran?” Lance asks. This is a reality of space that a lot of space shows/films ignore either purposefully or out of lack of education – even this show has times in later episode where the reality of how big space is seems to be ignored by the writers. I think people in general just do not realize how absolutely huge space is, including the amount of space within a single solar system, and thus how exponentially larger space between stars, and then space between galaxies is. It is a challenge in writing space-based fiction to balance the need to maintain tension with the reality of the immensity of space. “Like Earth, I can’t even see it,” Lance says. Uh, yeah, a bit past Saturn’s orbit and that happens – that’s why we can’t see Uranus nor Neptune with the naked eye from here on Earth. Lance’s comment here makes it sound like he would expect to have a chance to see Earth from another star system, but that’s something that becomes impossible even within our own system.

“Oh, we had that on Altea, only it wasn’t water, more like rocks. Razor sharp and boiling hot. They could knock a hole right in your head,” Coran says. This makes such little sense. I get that the episode is trying to be all, other planets can be so different than Earth, but this just doesn’t work. Life as we know it needs a liquid compound to serve as a universal solvent. This doesn’t mean that it absolutely has to be water, but the way we know the biology of life to function, water is the most likely candidate for such a substance across the whole universe. So, Altean life would most likely need significant amounts of water, which would result in a water cycle, which would mean they should have actual rain. Also, rock can be either razor sharp or boiling hot, not both. Rock that is hot enough that it could boil, in other words, be liquid, is magma/lava. If Altea is such that its environment allows for the evaporation and condensation of rock, then Altea is a hellish planet. So yeah, this line of Coran’s just does not work.

“You can’t leave,” Keith says. “You can’t tell me what to do!” Pidge retorts. Allura could though. The pod that Pidge wants to take does not belong to Pidge, nor did she ask to use/have it. “I never signed up for a lifetime in space fighting aliens,” Hunk says. Maybe not a lifetime, but the idea that they were working as a group to be able to fight against he Galra isn’t a new, sudden development. For anyone, Hunk included, to act like they didn’t know what the group’s broad goals were is dissonant. Shiro is willing to let Pidge go. He is right that it’s not right to try to force someone to be there, to be part of Voltron if they don’t want to. Shiro tells Pidge to “think about what [she’s] doing,” and that’s so much of my problem with her behavior here: She’s not thinking this through in the slightest. And again, she has no right to take the pod from the team if she’s not going to be part of the team.

When the explosion happens, Lance tries to shield Coran. It’s a nice, heroic moment for his character. The lights shutting down, especially in the external shot of the Castle, feels visceral. The Castle is without power, which they need to launch the Lions and to get the medical facilities working to help Lance. As much as Pidge’s plan to steal a pod bothers me, I do really like the narrative resonance it has in making it available to use here in this emergency. Pidge installed a cloaking device on the pod, and she puts in a similar system on the Green Lion, but I still come back to every Lion could have used having a cloaking system.

Lance was hurt bad by the explosion. Moving him, especially by just slinging his body over one’s shoulder and carrying him, is not medically wise. But that’s what Shiro does.

Shiro and Sendak fight. I still think Sendak’s arm is ridiculous, but Shiro’s is much cooler. The animation of the fight is beautiful. The shot of the collision between their fists in silhouette with a full moon behind them is one of the best shots the show has produced so far. With Lance and now Shiro taken out, Pidge is the only Paladin left in the Castle. That the episode had established Pidge’s adamant desire to leave, putting her in the place of being the only one really able to act within the Castle is narratively fitting. Keith and Allura find out that the attack on the Arusian village was staged specifically to get them out of the Castle.

The Galra have their own crystal, assumedly salvaged from their crashed ship, and they hook it up to the Castle. The fact that their crystal makes the Castle’s big external lights and shielding glow purple – aside from being the show’s use of purple to mono-color evil – suggests their crystal is physically and functionally different than the ones the Castle normally uses. I don’t remember this ever being something that’s examined though.

Coran and Hunk arrive at the Balmera, where Coran explains that though looking like a planet, Balmera are actually animals. It’s kind of funny to me now knowing how much this show violates the basic visual definition of a planet – that reaching a certain size results in a protoplanet forming into a roughly spheroid shape because of its gravity – to see the not-a-planet Balmera here looking more like a planet than a lot of the so-called planets in this show. Unfortunately, the Galra have control of this Balmera. I love Coran’s attempt to verbally evade the Galra ship ordering him to surrender. Coran crashes the pod at the bottom of a mine, with the first shadowy glimpse of the Balmeran people.

Pidge’s efforts inside the Castle demonstrates her Green Paladin quality of being daring. I do like that as much as Pidge frustrates me earlier in the episode, it feels totally believable to me that she can do everything she’s doing here. Her bravery is inspiring. But it also reinforces how the idea of her going off by herself now was not a path to success for her. Though she has to directly act alone, she’s in contact with Allura. There is still an element of teamwork. The situation grows close to being out of their influence, so Pidge opts for something that could realistically kill her: stab the energy system with her bayard to shut it down. It works, but the Galra learn she’s in the Castle.

The episode ends unresolved, and I like that the show is giving this plotline time to breathe. Giving it time emphasizes the tension and magnitude of the situation the characters are dealing with.

Day 7: Gladnis - ABO (Omegaverse)

Summary: Ignis is an Omega living in Niflheim where Omegas are treated badly. But his life gets turned upside down when two people from Lucis appear and say that they want to help the Omegas. Ignis doesn’t believe them and especially Gladio confuses him.

Who was that Gladiolus Amicitia? That was what had been bothering Ignis for the past days.

He had never met an Alpha like him and he questioned his and his friend's - Noctis, apparently the Prince of Insomnia - intentions.

He stills recalled their words about how Omegas deserved better and how they wanted to talk to the authorities of the Niflheim empire and make a deal with them.

Apparently their kingdom had things Niflheim didn't and would like to have. Money, resources, workers…Ignis could create a long list. However, what sounded like a miracle to him, would be destroyed by the harsh reality, he was certain.

Because no one cared about an Omega and no one wanted to create equality between Alphas and Omegas, at least not in Niflheim. That's what Ignis clearly understood and learned during the years he had been in this world. It was only natural to face the two of them with suspicion instead of creating some false hope that would crush his already punished soul.

Prompto however, his friend and the only person he truly trusted, seemed to believe them when they said they were there to talk to the politicians of Niflheim to change the country and its view on Omegas and Alphas.

A noble mission, Ignis thought as he drank his coffee, but impossible to achieve. He himself witnessed the depths of this system and how dark and unforgiving it was.

Alphas and Omegas were rare and only made 40% of the population. Anyone else was a Beta. It was normal for an Omega to belong to the lower class when they were surrounded by Alphas, and it was normal to do as they were told for many decades.

Then the laws outside of Niflheim changed, or so he heard, but never truly believed in it, and equality won.

Equality was a concept Ignis only ever dreamed of while witnessing how cruel his own country was by using Omegas to breed more and more Alphas. Strong humans, smart, born to rule and to succeed in whatever they did.

Omegas were only toys, a thing to justify the need of an Alpha and nothing more or less, and the heat they went through once a month, was nothing but a cruel reminder of their place in this world.

The heat made every Omega weak, which made it impossible to do anything and, at the same time, awoke a need to feel an Alpha inside their body. There were pills against it but the government did a great job making it hard for an Omega to get them.

Why all of this happened? Ignis didn't know but he was certain they wanted to become the strongest empire by breeding more and more Alphas.

Even though he had a good job and a high position, which was unusual in itself and actually impossible, he did not know more than his boss told him. Ravus, his boss and his ex-partner, who felt guilty for what happened in the past and probably would do anything Ignis asked him, just so Ignis would forgive him.

Ignis sighed and rubbed the spot between his eyes. He had no time to think about the past and needed to focus on the present. If Gladio and Noctis were indeed from Lucis and there to help the Omegas, just like Ignis and Prompto had for the past three years, he needed to work with them. Aranea helped them and she made things possible - like transporting babies and families out of Niflheim - since Ignis couldn't, because people knew and watched him.

He put his empty cup into the sink and left for work.

When he arrived in the office he didn't expect to meet Gladiolus and Noctis there. Somehow he felt nervous when he saw them standing at the counter and talking to the secretary. Okay, perhaps their attendance wasn't that surprising since his boss was a politician himself and working for the building authority. It was thanks to him that Ignis found an empty school building he used as a hiding place for Omegas and he knew Ravus was risking his whole career by helping him. Ignis felt grateful but he still couldn't forgive him.

“I'll take care of them, Paula,” Ignis said after he approached the counter and stopped the two of them from saying something they shouldn't say.

He didn't know them for long but he understood that the people from Lucis were different, open minded, dangerous for the people from Niflheim. But he also knew that Ravus was the right person to approach if they wanted to cooperate with the Niflheim empire.

“Ignis, what are you doing here?” Noctis asked and it was still weird to talk to an Alpha without feeling like he had no value and was just a piece of meat. Not Noctis nor Gladio gave him that look and it was sheer luck he had met them before they could talk to anyone else.

“I work here. Please, follow me,” he said and walked down the corridor towards Ravus’ office, which was also his working place. Yeah, that was right, he was the Advisor of his ex, his boss, and the person who caused Ignis so much pain and now felt guilty, and would probably for the rest of his life.

“You can't just walk into an office and tell people you're from Lucis,” Ignis said after he closed the door.

He didn't hear what they said to Paula but he remembered their first meeting clearly and how both proudly and almost naively announced that they were from Lucis and on a mission to free the Omegas. Ignis would have laughed about that if he weren't shocked.

“We didn't,” Gladio spoke. “All we did was ask if we could talk to the head of the building authority.”

“And why him?”

“We have a plan,” Noctis said and Ignis shook his head no.

“You're either too optimistic or blessed by the stars. I don't know which it is, but you've found the right place. My boss is actually supporting the Omegas,” Ignis explained and raised an eyebrow when he saw the both of them grinning.

“What?”

“Gladio went out yesterday and met some people. They talked about Ravus and how he was different from all the other authorities. That's why we thought this might be the right place to start our mission,” Noctis explained and Gladio looked at Ignis with an expression he couldn't understand.

Did he, or they, try to impress him or convince him that their ambitions were honest?

“Who told you that?” Ignis begged that it was no Alpha since that would be very bad for him.

“An Omega. You know the places were they prostitute Omegas, right? That's where I went.”

Yes, Ignis knew those places, and they were awful. So he glared at Gladio intensely, trying to see how he felt about those places. Sure, it was the source of any kinds of informations, but it was still a horrible place.

But for an Alpha it must be heaven.

“I didn't do anything. I just talked to them,” Gladio justified his actions but Ignis didn't believe it fully. He was still an Alpha and no Alpha could deny an Omega’s body for too long. It was in their blood. “I'm honest. I'm not like the Alphas you know, Ignis.”

Hearing those words made Ignis angry, so angry that he didn't know if he should laugh, cry, or scream.

Gladio was not like the Alphas that Ignis knew? And what did Gladio know about Ignis? Nothing. No one knew anything besides Ignis and the people who hurt him. Also, why did Gladio try so hard to convince him? Since day one he tried to make Ignis to believe him and he wondered why. Although, he was certain he knew the reason behind his behavior, just like every other Alpha that was after him.

It was his scent, which became even stronger when his heat appeared. Sweet, addictive, unique, like a drug for an Alpha and it send a cold shiver down his spine when he recalled that.

Before they could say more the door opened and Ignis watched Ravus enter the office. His cold eyes immediately were fixed on Noctis and Gladio before they wandered to Ignis.

“Paula told me that two weirdos wanted to see me,” Ravus spoke, brutal and honest as he could be. Ignis used to find that amusing but that was a long time ago. “I'm Ravus Nox Fleuret, and you are?”

Ignis watched Ravus while Noctis introduced himself, as usual, trying to look indifferent but Ignis knew him good enough to see that he was interested in what Noctis had to say.

Then his eyes wandered back to the other two and he noticed that Gladio looked like he was ready to jump at Ravus.

“I understand,” Ravus said and looked at Ignis again when Noctis was done talking. “I'm surprised about how much you know. But before I decide if I'll help you, I have questions that need answers.”

With that Ignis and Gladio left the office so Noctis and Ravus could talk like the authorities they were. If Gladio were any other Alpha, Ignis wouldn't spend more time than necessary with him, but he couldn't leave him alone and he needed to know what else Gladio knew. He was an Alpha, and Alphas were smart after all. Besides he didn't trust them to keep their mouth shut about the fact that they were from Insomnia and he didn't know if they would behave without stirring attention from people they shouldn't cross ways with.

Ignis closed the door after they entered one of the meeting rooms and was about to say something but Gladio spoke first.

“That Ravus… He's your boss?”

“He is.”

“Is he really a good person? I could smell that he sleeps with several Omegas,” Gladio said his face becoming hard.

“This is not Insomnia,” Ignis shrugged and wondered if Noctis and Gladio had the slightest idea about how Niflheim functioned and what position Omegas and Alphas had. This shouldn't be surprising because it had been the same everywhere before certain countries had changed their laws.

“I know this isn't Insomnia but I can't trust a person whose actions are against their words.”

“If an Alpha doesn't do what is expected from him, they get into trouble for acting suspicious. Ravus is only doing what he has to do in order to keep his position so he can help with the influence he has.”

Ignis didn't want to defend the person who brought hell to his life, but he was not stupid and it was obvious that Ravus had changed and only did what he had to do. Just like Ignis did, even though he could renounce certain things that came with being an Omega.

“Are you two together?” Gladio asked after some silence. “I could smell your scent coming from him too.”

“We're working together, I'm his Advisor so it's probably normal that you smell my scent on him.”

“No,” Gladio shook his head no and Ignis noticed how tense he was.

What was wrong with him? What was that talk about scents and that he could smell them? Was he some sort of super Alpha? At least it would explain how built and handsome he was. “An Alpha has to sleep with an Omega, otherwise their scent won't be left on their body. Every Alpha can smell that.”

This was news to Ignis and his surprise was probably written all over his face. He believed he knew everything about the Alphas and Omegas, or maybe it was only Gladio and the people from Lucis who were able to smell that. Since they didn't seem to sleep with every Omega they met but actually cared.

“I've never heard of that.”

“It's the truth though. That's why I was wondering if you two are a thing.”

Ignis felt anger rising inside him. No, he and Ravus were not a thing, something like that didn't exist here in Niflheim.

“We are not.”

“But you sleep together?”

“Who do you think you are? Coming here and asking me private questions? It's none of your business, is it?” Ignis snapped.

“Did he hurt you?” Gladio didn't give in and fueled Ignis’ anger even more.

“Why do you care?”

Ignis didn't want to talk about it, especially not with an Alpha. But what pissed him off the most was that he didn't understand why Gladio cared. It made no sense whatsoever.

Gladio didn't answer right away, perhaps not certain himself why he cared, or maybe he didn't want to say it. Whatever it was, Ignis wanted to leave, but he also knew that Noctis and Gladio were helpful to stop this cruel system Niflheim had.

“I want to create a bond with you,” Gladio said and Ignis stopped breathing.

Time stopped, his heart too, and anxiety crawled up his spine and made him numb.

Did he really hear what Gladio just said? He wanted to create a bond with him? He wanted to own Ignis and make him his personal thing? Because if an Alpha and an Omega created a bond, the Omega wouldn't be able to be with anyone else. His body would only be able to accept Gladio and no one else.

So he was an Alpha like the ones Ignis knew after all…

“Don't fuck with me,” Ignis hissed.

Oh, he was pissed, so pissed that he felt like he could attack Gladio and hurt him in any way he could.

“I'm not! I'm being honest. You know what it means to bond with an Omega, right?”

Ignis knew it damn well and he would never, ever, create a bond with anyone. He considered it once, but he learned his lesson.

“I won't become your fuck toy,” he warned Gladio, eyes and voice cold as a brutal winter day.

“What? That's not what I mean.”

Ignis saw Gladio's honest confusion and it confused him in return. What the hell was even happening? How did they go from strangers to talking about bonding?

“Really? You only create a bond when you don't want to share an Omega and you want to keep him as your personal trophy, there to fulfill your own desires. No bond is the only freedom we have.”

“No. That is not… a bond isn't that. At least not in Insomnia,” Gladio explained and struggled with his words by moving his lips but not saying anything. “It is a declaration of love. Something sacred, like marriage.”

“Excuse me?”

Love? Ignis felt like crying, laughing and screaming, everything at the same time.

Love didn't exist, not between and Alpha and Omega, especially not in Niflheim. Besides, Gladio didn't know him and he was probably intoxicated by Ignis’ scent, just like many others before him.

His scent was a burden and a curse, given by the Gods he used to pray to when he was a kid. He didn't know what he had done to deserve that.

“Do you believe in love at first sight?”

Ignis couldn't do this anymore, he couldn't listen to this anymore. This utter nonsense that hurt him in a way he hadn't felt in a long time. The feeling when all your hopes get crushed and you're left alone to gather all the pieces with bleeding fingers.

“Stop that,” Ignis said after he huffed a laugh.

“I'm serious, I-”

“Shut up! Stop with that nonsense,” Ignis snapped and he was sure someone from outside must have heard him. He never became loud, he never snapped like that, not when he wasn't pushed to his limits. “Love… what a freaking joke. You clearly don't understand what sort of life we Omegas live here.”

“Perhaps. But you can teach me and we can help.”

“Perhaps you two can help and all I'm going to do is work with you for the sake of the Omegas living in this shit hole. Nothing more. No bonds, nothing of that love nonsense.”

Gladio seemed to be conflicted but when his shoulders fell, Ignis took that as a sign of defeat.

“You don't even know me. I don't know what sort of fairy tale Insomnia is but this is the real life for me. It's Brutal and it's cruel, but you'll see for yourself soon enough,” Ignis predicted for Gladio because, if he and Noctis ever came so far as to reach other authorities, they would learn everything soon enough. For example why Ravus smelled like several Omegas, what the price every Omega had to pay, and what was expected from an Alpha.

“And I'll prove that neither Noctis nor I are the kind of Alphas you think we are.”

Ignis shook his head and though he wanted to leave he decided to stay before Gladio would share his nonsense with someone else and get into trouble.

He almost felt sorry for Gladio but he couldn't show that. This person believed he was in love with Ignis?

No, love didn't exist. Love was only an illusion and beyond that was hell.

Ignis wouldn't fall for that, not ever again.

“To make Daxom great again.” Oh, no.

Ok. That flashback. I have mentioned before, how disturbed I am to find that the original confrontation of Kara’s prejudices towards Daxom have since been shown as actual deserved disdain, and how Daxom being actually exactly as bad as she said (to a caricaturish level) undermines Kara’s supposed lesson as well as treating Krypton as holier-than-thou despite all the huge flaws in its culture that have been made so evident, creating this huge us-vs-them divide with a really clear ‘good side’ and ‘bad side’ and absolutely zero nuance, etc. The flashback to Mon-El’s departure from Daxom as it actually happened does no favours to any aspect of the narrative: Mon-El is shown as hesitant and concerned for the safety of others in defiance of the prevailing Daxomite attitude, because the show is too afraid of the audience backlash if they show him being truly callous instead of just passively allowing it, while at the same time the narrative gives no quarter for Daxom and its people as a whole despite their undeserved fates. We are supposed to see Mon-El’s guard and think him awful, but what do we expect any ‘good’ guard to do? Maybe not kill that one guy, but the rest, with the ignoring everyone else in order to focus on rescuing the person he’s pledged to protect? Even killing the Kryptonian makes sense (is not morally ok, but makes sense) in the context of being exactly the kind of targeted violence that happens in the real world when people are ‘othered’. The coding of the behaviour is so transparent it’s disgusting, and coupled with that not-even-veiled MAGA line just before? Daxom’s Republicans to Krypton’s Democrats is a pretty fucking gross parallel to draw. I am very disappointed in the show for all of this garbage.

Remember when I fucking flagged Lyra as using Winn for her own ends the second she stepped on screen? Fucking flagged it. 

This is a much better Hamilton joke right here than the one a few episodes ago, but that one a few episodes ago was still too much, and that steps on this, because, really? Two sizeable Hamilton gags with only a couple of episodes between them? You’re trying WAY too hard to be current, show. It’s embarrassing.

Uurrrgghhh, and now we’re doing the ‘oh actually Lyra had a good reason for being terrible!’ thing? This shit is so predictable and empty and I am so over it. Remember one episode ago when this show was momentarily good again?

Is Guardian fighting in a fucking glass factory or what? So many glass panes to be thrown through.

So, we pretending that Lyra’s lie and Mon-El’s lie are the same? Just ‘they lied’ is not a parallel, show. These are not comparable situations.

See, Mon-El says in his apology that ‘I was a spoiled, useless person, but I didn’t know’, and that’s a big part of what is making this whole storyline, all season long, so poor. The total lack of nuance in Daxom. The clear-cut morality of Kryptonians which, also, lacks the nuance of reality. If Mon-El was raised in that life, how much opportunity did he have for seeing the flaws in it and recognising them as such? We have no concept of his level of self-awareness, and refusing to allow people room to grow is not how you achieve progress. At the same time, Mon-El’s process of self-improvement on Earth has been so paint-by-numbers simple, it’s hard to take it seriously. If he’s found changing so easy, how entrenched were those ‘spoiled, useless’ teachings that made up his entire formative existence? Real people take years to overcome such things, not least because when it’s a commonplace feature of how you were raised, it’s hard to recognise that there’s even a problem, let alone dismantle the rationale in your own mind that has allowed you to be unthinkingly complicit. Expecting Mon-El to change like flipping a coin is unfair; blaming him for the circumstances of his birth is unfair; telling this story in the way that they have, with his self-awareness and capacity for immediate total overhaul not just of personality but of ideals apparently uninhibited and detailed with only the slightest of backslides? Utterly unrealistic. What should have been a long, hard journey of self-reflection, questioning, and honestly ugly behaviour has instead been casual comic relief and romantic faux pas, and that’s so insulting. I can’t support Mon-El as a character because I can’t support the ill-constructed narrative that made him; in basic terms, he doesn’t make enough sense. He’s too unrealistic to function.

URGH. This is such a fucking mess I am annoyed at myself for even trying to untangle it. That kinda happens when you’re trying to over-simplify your storytelling to this extent: the break from reality is too intense, and you end up with a heap of confusion that your audience can’t figure out how to engage with on a meaningful level. In university, the single most important word I learned was ‘ethnocentricity’ - the belief that your own culture/background is inherently superior to all others. On the surface level, this is plain ol’ racism - and can be many other ‘isms as well, as cultural background shapes our perceptions of gender, sexuality, religion, etc. Looking deeper, we see ethnocentricity manifest when we assume that our social or moral codes are automatically the correct ones, without pausing to question where we got those codes from, and whether or not, actually, there might be better ways to do things. I actually debated this directly, back in 2016 when two Australian men were executed in Indonesia for drug smuggling, and the debate over the morality of the death penalty was rife throughout the country. I’m not going to get into that debate again here, but as an example of ethnocentricism, it was a case in which a lot of Australians flat refused to acknowledge the possibility that just because another country has different laws which conflict with our way of doing things, doesn’t necessarily mean that the people of that country are corrupt, lesser beings with an under-developed sense of morality which we need to step in and correct. Different ways of doing things can be shocking to our sensibilities at first blush, but we have to think about why they are that way and how the backdrop of that logic informs the constructs we see, before we pass high-and-mighty judgment over others. 

Supergirl’s Daxom narrative is a perfect example of ethnocentricism at work, with zero reflection: Kara is right, Mon-El is wrong, this cultural division is all-encompassing and without exception, the end. To be clear: I’m not suggesting that there’s a way to argue for, say, slavery being ok, but what there is is nuance to how people reach such a conclusion, and if we refuse to engage with the nuance we can’t engage with cultural learning, sharing, or understanding, and that’s how you end up with blank hostility instead of working towards more positive futures. Something being ‘obviously morally correct’ is (as evidenced through the entirety of human history) not enough to change systemic issues outright; if it were, the systemic issues wouldn’t have developed in the first place. Supergirl has run into trouble here because it’s trying to be topical, addressing the divisions in current US politics, but it also doesn’t want to actually have a nuanced conversation about the subject, and so instead we get heavy-handed black-and-white morality that only alienates the two sides instead of identifying common ground and building upon it to bridge the gap. Moreover, the show cripples its ability to explore these concepts in a better, more thorough way in the future, because it refuses to commit to the shades of grey in its situation and instead builds a two-camps concept in which any dithering or olive-branching between the two looks like ideological compromise and moral degradation instead of the complicated and painful process of learning that it represents in the real world. 

The truth is that as nice as it is to sit on your moral high horse feeling pure and special while everyone else scrabbles on the muddy ground, you can’t understand the people down below and you certainly can’t help them unless you’re willing to hop down and work through the mud as well, and what use is ideological purity if you’re the only one who benefits from it? That doesn’t mean that we should all start behaving in ways that conflict with our moral compass because, hey, some people are bigots, but it does mean recognising that we are all in a process of self-improvement and if you’re not at least open to the possibility that your way of doing things isn’t the best way, you can’t progress yourself, nor does treating others with condescension help bring them to your way of thinking or at least to a middle ground from which you can proceed together. That’s all a much messier and trickier prospect than what this show wants to deal with, and yet it’s exactly the story they’ve blundered into the middle of with the ridiculous notion that they’re gonna be able to clear-cut their way out. Mon-El’s process should involve a lot of questions: not ‘this thing is correct because obviously it is’ or ‘this thing is correct because Kara says so’, but rather ‘I’m being told that my way is wrong: why? Why is it wrong? Why was I taught that it was right? In what ways has my belief in the correctness of this thing influenced my perceptions of other things? Is it possible that this thing I believe actually is right, and Kara is wrong? Why should her perspective be infallible? What are the consequences of either possibility? Does that jive with the rest of my understanding of the world? What else is altered by this change? Are these alterations also correct?’ and so on, and so on, ad nauseum. Exhausting, repetitive, and complicated, yes, but that’s the reality (not least because he’s supposed to be a literal alien from another planet, but, whatever). At first, I thought it was stupid of them to introduce Mon-El without bothering to spend time on his integration into Earth culture outside of a handful of gimmicks; now I see that it’s much worse than that. I don’t expect this whole arc to end well; I only hope that it ends quickly.
